Be content with your pay
#1
I forget the verse number but there is a verse where John the Baptist supposedly says 'be content with your pay' in the mainstream translations. Is there a different peshitta rendering because this verse has perplexed me for some time. It seems to suggest by its translation that we should be content with whatever salaries we get, and I am dubious as to whether John meant this!

Hello,

I'm not sure if there is a place where John the Baptist says that, but Paul says something similar in Hebrews 13:5, whereby we should be content with what we have and not love money. I would think that being content with what you have would include your salary, if that is what you have.

I haven't had a chance to see how the Aramaic reads since I'm here at work but maybe someone else can expound on that (or I'll just add it later).

Shlama Gentile!

I believe you're referring to the last phrase of Luke 3:14.
Here's John Wesley Etheridge's translation of the Peshitta text--

And the military servants asked of him and said, What shall we also do? And he said to them, Molest no man, oppress no man, and let your wages satisfy you.

The word for wages is 'aph-sown-yath-khon'--Jwktynwsp0
SEDRA has 'rations, pay.'

'and is sufficient for you your wages' is Younan's Literal

Isn't that the same John the Baptist that ate locust and honey?

Just Kidding...

I'm sure the main message in its simplest form would be that like someone said ( don't know names yet ) that be happy with what ya got and don't dream of money.

There is a good "Jesus Saying" in the Gospel of Thomas that goes along that line, of not wanting more money.

Its a parable of man who dreamt of money all night long -- well that night he died.

Meaning that, in his heart he had $$$$$$$$, whereas he should have yeshua.
