Lk 2:47 Answers? Possible split word?
#1
Shlama Akhay

(Faking Akhi Paul :-)) In Greek Lk 2:47 we read with astonishment:

existanto de pantev oi akouontev autou epi tj sunesei kai taiv apokrisesin autou
???Everyone who heard him was amazed at his understanding and his ANSWERS??? (NIV).

ANSWERS: That has been the usual translation (even Akhi Paul???s or Murdock???s), but think about this:
In previous verse 46 we read
...
kaqezomenon en mesw twn didaskalwn kai akouonta autwn kai eperwtwnta autouv

???sitting among the teachers, listening to them and ASKING THEM QUESTIONS???.

So it was the Teenager Jesus who was ASKING QUESTIONS (PNT Jwhl L04mw ), not inversely: teachers making questions to Him. Therefore, why should He ANSWER to them? I had always wondering about this. It???s possible, of course, to imagine that ???He was answering his own questions??? (if teachers couldn???t answer them), but it doesn???t sound too coherent... A possible explanation? Peshitta to the rescue!

In Lk 2:47 PNT we read:
Yhwmgtpbw htmkxb hl wwh Ny9m4d Nyly0 Jwhlk wwh Nyhymtw

The word 0mgtp in Aramaic means: Answer, but also: WORD, PHRASE, PROPOSITION, HEMISTICH (half of a verse in poetry), THING, FACT, ACT, Foot (metric). (Joan Ferrer-M.A. Nogueras, Breve dictionario sir??aco, Barcelona 2000; G. Anton Kiraz, Lexical Tools to the Syriac NT, Sheffield, Eng 1997: WORD). In many texts in PNT is used in this sense or in combination with Ynp (Aramaic idiom? return word = answer) or Bhy . See: Mt 12:36; 15:23; 22:45; 26:62; 27:12; 27:14;Mk 12:28; 12:34; 14:60; 15:4; 15:5; Lk 2:47; 4:4; 14:6; 20:26; 22:68; 23:9; Jn 1:22;18:22;19:9; Acts 25:4; Rom 9:20; 10:8; 14:12; Col 4:6; Heb 4:13; 1 Pe 4:5 (???pthgm??? searched in Sword Project Peshitta).

Conclusion:
Wouldn???t be then ???according Aramaic??? a more context-consistent translation something like this?:

???Everyone who heard him was amazed at his understanding and his WORDS (OR PROPOSITIONS...)???

What do you think, Akhi Paul? Does this make sense?

Fwx0b

I was about to suggest you that, but I didn't dare it... I'm really impressed by your humility... Thanks for that example! God bless you!
