Paul, do you have transliteration of Beatitudes?
#1
Do you have one?

And do you have also for Lords's Prayer?

I just need them two examples to finsih off the poetry and word-play compendium

btw Is "do not let us enter into temptation" more accurate than "do not lead us into temptation"? That solves as little problem if it is...

This link is awesome for Lord's Prayer, is it accurate enough for me to use in poetry artcicle? The rhyming is evident in it

http://www.metamind.net/freeprayer1.html

Yes I know it's from metamind, and they are a bit kooky. Make that a lot kooky. Downright heretical even... But I think that is simply the Lamsa translation. Is it cool?

Shlama Akh,

Here is the pronunciation (interlinear) for the Lord's Prayer:

http://www.peshitta.org/pdf/Prayer.pdf

I'll work on one for the Beatitudes.....

One problem, with Lord's Prayer. You say "do not bring us into trial". Lamsa says "do not let us enter into temptation". Obviously, since Satan is called the tempter, Lamsa's version sounds nicer. What is the best rendering?

And what is the rhyming bit? Just the words that end in "ma" "la" and "na"?

Shlama Akhi Chris,

Lamsa is definitely off with the "do not let us" part - since the verb "Taa-lan {l-}" means "lead/bring us {into}". Lamsa was "theologically translating" again.

The rhyming structure is like this:

Awon d'washmayya (our Father in Heaven)

nith-Qaddash Shmakh (holy be your Name)
Teh-teh Malkothakh (your Kingdom come)
Nehweh sow-ya-nakh (your Will be done)

Aykanna d'washmaya (as it is in heaven)
ap b'ar-aa (also on earth)

Haw-lan lakh-ma (give us the bread)
d'son-qa-nan yo-ma-na (of our need this day)

w'ashwooq lan khaw-beyn (and forgive us our offences)
aykanna d'ap akhanan shwaqan l'khay-ya-weyn (as we have forgiven those who have offended us)

w'la taa-lan l'nis-yo-na (and do not lead us into trial)
ella passan min bee-sha (but deliver us from the evil one)

mottol de-lakh he mal-ko-tha (for yours is the kingdom)
w'khayla (and the power)
w'tishbokhta (and the glory)

l'alam, almen, amen. (forever and ever, amen)

Cool! Thanks!

As for "do not lead us into trial", I don't like it as much, but if that's what it says...

Now all I need is beatutudes and the poetry/wordplay and idioms articles are done

Hey Paul, it just occurred to me. I like your translation after all. Trial is a lot different from temptation. Satan is the tempter...
