Acts 8:23

Shlama Akhay,

I am now translating verse 23 and am amazed at the mistranslation of the Greek versions. They read:

"For I perceive that you are in the gall of bitterness, and in the bonds of iniquity."

Now the Aramaic reads:

"For I perceive that you are in a bitter 0dbk ("Kabda"), and in the bonds of iniquity."

Here is the Comprehensive Aramaic Lexicon entry for the root in question:

kbd N kbd)
1 Palestinian,Syr,JBA liver
2 Syr anger

Here is the Compendious Syriac Dictionary entry:

<!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://www.peshitta.org/images/kabda.jpg">http://www.peshitta.org/images/kabda.jpg</a><!-- m -->

It is obvious that the Greek translators misread "gall~liver" here, instead of the more contextually proper "anger."

Simon was angry that he could not have the power that the Apostles had. He was jealous.

Besides, what is the "gall of bitterness", anyway?
