Love/Owe (Luke 7:41-42)
#1
Shlama Akhay,

There is a word play here. (See also Ab. Valentin's post on this passage under the "Polysemy-Split Word" forum, with this response)

Luke 7:41-42

0bwx 0rm dxl wwh ty0 0byx Nyrt
There were two debtors to a certain creditor

00m4mx 0rnyd 0wh Byx dx
One owed him 500 dinarii

Ny4mx 0rnyd 0nrx0w
And the other, 50 dinarii

Qb4 Jwhyrtl (rpml Jwhl 0wh tyldw
And because they had nothing with which to repay, he forgave them both

Yhwybxn ryty Jwhnm Lykh 0ny0
Which of them, therefore, will love (hint: owe) him most?

Translation doesn't do justice.

Looooove it! <!-- s:inlove: --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/inlove.gif" alt=":inlove:" title="In Love" /><!-- s:inlove: -->

God, this is sooo beautiful. <!-- s:wow: --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/wow.gif" alt=":wow:" title="Wow" /><!-- s:wow: -->

"Debtors, Creditor, Owe and Love" - all from the one Aramaic root Bx

If we create a "Top-Ten Examples" Forum - this would definitely belong there. <!-- s:bigups: --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/bigups.gif" alt=":bigups:" title="Big Ups" /><!-- s:bigups: -->

Shlama Akhi Rob,

Great stuff, akhi! <!-- s:bigups: --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/bigups.gif" alt=":bigups:" title="Big Ups" /><!-- s:bigups: --> <!-- s:bomb: --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/bomb.gif" alt=":bomb:" title="The Bomb" /><!-- s:bomb: --> Do we have a 'Janus' in that last usage of 'love' / 'owe'?
I didn't know if that was a "close-but-no-cigar" status or "good-to-go" status as far as a Janus is concerned. Whatcha think?
