Shlama all--
My friend Joe Viel wrote me about this one and I thought it was just great. The Greek of Philippians 2:1 is comical to say the least:

If there be therefore any consolation in Christ, if any comfort of love, if any fellowship of the Spirit, if any bowels and mercies...

Philippians 2:1 (KJV)

According to crosswalk.com:

splangkh'-non
bowels, intestines, (the heart, lungs, liver, etc.)
bowels

Then, to try to explain the reading they add:

the bowels were regarded as the seat of the more violent passions, such as anger and love; but by the Hebrews as the seat of the tenderer affections, esp. kindness, benevolence, compassion; hence our heart (tender mercies, affections, etc.)
a heart in which mercy resides

Okay, but notice the Aramaic for what is I believe a simpler explanation:

CAL Outline Lexicon: GENERAL rxm

051 JLAGal,Syr to be pitied

LS2 723

Seems to me that "idiom" meaning crosswalk suggests is an apology to counter the dual meaning of RAKHEM. Plus, the explanation to my mind does not make sense on the surface. if the bowels contain all the bad passions, then why is the writer encouraging "bowels of compassion"??? Is love a violent emotion? What does the heart have to do with bowels?

Any thoughts?
