The "Eloi, Eloi" issue
#1
This site below gives some interesting alternatives on the whole issue:

http://www.srr.axbridge.org.uk/syriac_intro.html

Any thoughts on the proposed meanings?

~Shakes head~ It's incorrect in several of it's renderings.

But is it possible Steve-o that the reference to 'eloi' and 'eli' could be to something else and not God? What are the variant meanings of the word 'el'? Could it not possibly mean 'i'm tired' or 'woe' like the author there suggests is possible?

Possible, yes anything is possible. :-) Probable? Like the moon being made of green cheese

Quote:/'Lhy 'Lhy Lmn' $bqtny/ in Mark 15v34
Giving a forth possible literal translation:"I'm tired, I'm tired, for what reason have you departed from me"

/'Lhy/ is "Alohi" ("my God"). "I'm tired" is not a valid translation.

Quote:/'Ly' 'Ly' Lmn' $bqtny/
Which gives us a fifth possible translation: "Woe, woe! For what reason have you departed from me"

/'Ly'/ does not mean "Woe" but Elijah ("Eleeyo", "Eleeyahu" in Hebrew). "Woe" in Aramaic is "wai" or "woi" depending on dialect (the cognate of the Hebrew "oy" :-) ).

Assuming that you are a trinitarian Steve-o [correct me if I am wrong about that] if Yshu is god then how can he ask himself if he has been forsaken? I don't think we should abandon other possible meanings of these words

Yes I suppose you could call me "Trinitarian" as I see the Father, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit all as God (singular). To go off on my philosophy concerning the multiple streams of consciousness that are inherit to God's being would take a lot of time. The best way to describe it, however, is how I've found it here on this forums (the concepts of qnoomo and kyono).

The point is that he did not ask if he was forsaken. Many of the alternate meanings on that website are bogus, and the ones that are possible are highly improbable. :-)

If that were the case, he probably would have used "men" (i.e. "Elee Elee, lmono shvaqth menee?")

So what did he ask then? I went to your website, but doesn't it seem to reinforce the 'forsaken' meaning?

if I can remember Paul's quote correctly on here:

"My GOD, My GOD, why hast Thou spared me?"

Meaning: let's get this overwith, let it be finished.

If I have remembered this wrong, correct me, don't wanna put words in your mouth Paul.
