AENT Errors
#76
Thirdwoe Wrote::
It seems to me that he made his work much harder than it needed to be, but it must have paid off...and continues to with people needing to continue to buy a new edition every year or so, as he fixes all the errors and slowly brings the English text and the Aramaic text together, so they match.

To me, this is terrible, and should never have been done the way it was done. Was it about money? He could have put his teachings online for free, and took the time he has been given, to bring forth an accurate and faithful translation of The Eastern Peshitta.
I think you're missing the point completely. You and Roth have two different visions here. What the AENT primarily is, is a Netzari Bible with Netzari commentary for the Netzari community. The updates have been mostly commentary based, based upon feedback from the Netzari community and what that community needs. Although there have been text revisions and corrections here and there, the goal has never been to have the English in perfect alignment with the corresponding Aramaic text, or vice versa. Roth's original plan was to put his teachings up for free, but he was responding to the needs of the community who wanted it as a study bible and were able to convince him of this when all the money was put up and there was clearly more than enough support. But as far as I understand it, this was not done for the Peshitta community. Hence, the two different visions here. But that's also why I think if it's put on someones heart to go through and help point out errors, they should do that so that the Body then can benefit as a whole.

But it is definitely not about money. Not at all. Andrew isn't the type who refuses to have a job and then beg for money every week as some do. The new editions are simply new with every printing; if you're going to do a subsequent printing, why not update it with more commentary and any text revisions that were brought your attention? This is no way requires people having to buy a new edition everytime it comes out. Only a very small select few do that, and they would be classified as die hard AENT supporters/fans. And having gone through all the updates myself, I can tell you that those are the only ones who would benefit from buying the new editions anyway. While the new editions are better, they are by no means essential if you have an older edition. Although, I will do an in-depth analysis of the 5th edition to let everyone know just how much it was updated this time, because I think this edition may have the most updates yet.

I thought I'd add today that I'll be receiving Herb Jahn's Aramaic New Covenant when I get home. Sometime this week I'll put a video up on Youtube about it if any of you are interested. I wish Roth would release a leatherbound AENT, because the leather seems more durable than a hardback. The binding is loose on the AENT (unlike Bauscher's Aramaic New Testament in Plain English, which is very tight) and the corners wear out real easily.

Hmm... I've never had an issue with the binding on AENT. If it's too tight the pages won't stay flat though. Is Basuchers NT like this? I know Lulu publications tend to be like that. I agree though that the edges wear down, but the current editions I think are better than the first edition.

The AENT is bound nicely, I agree. I don't know if my binding has gotten looser or not. Bauscher's New Testament was so tightly bound that you couldn't lay it flat like you can most Bible's. Janet Magiera's Messianic Version is the same way. A leatherbound AENT would be very nice, though!

What about her regular version with the notes? I have her interlinears and other study materials, so I know what you mean.

I agree that a leather bound AENT would probably be nice (and I've been really big on soft, flexible leather versions in the past), but I've become a sucker for the Judaic hardback look. Of course, the hardback could be updated to be leather bound hardback. Or, if you had money to spare, you could do it yourself through Leonards Book Restoarion (check out a beautiful leather hardback rebind here).

I don't have the original version of Magiera's translation. I will probably get it at some point just for the notes though. The leatherbound Tanakh was gorgeous! I might have to do that sometime. Maybe get my Lamsa and AENT leatherbound.

This is very recent, but Andrew is still saying that the Khabouris was scribed in the year 165 A.D. Shamasha Paul, please help set the record straight, as this is a needless mistake that is still being perpetuated. Have you looked over the digital copy of the Colophon? And if you have Andrew's ears...please speak into them about this matter.

Andrew is telling us here that he used the 1920 UBS critical text as his base text, which most others do these days, which is what's printed in his 1st and 2nd editions in Aramaic letters, but is now changed into Hebrew letters...and I assume the wording is the same as before. Then, he took what is said different in the Khabouris text and edited those parts into the text of the UBS version.

But, remember that both Younan's Interlinear and Murdoch's source texts, are/were not the UBS text of 1920...and their English renderings are the base English text of the AENT...so, there is no way that the AENT English text, which is greatly edited from these two sources and which now read in a more "Hebrew" sounding way, is going to match up with the edited 1920 UBS text, with Khabouris readings in a handful of places.

If you ever want these English and Aramaic texts to match up...and have a truly Eastern Peshitta for the 22 books...it would be much much better and wiser just to start over and translate The Khabouris text itself!!! And why is Andrew still calling this an "interlinear", does he not know what that means?

If he had made this into a true interlinear edition, with a literal text on the left page, it would be true to the actual version of the Aramaic text he edited. But, that is in a perfect world right?

In the beginning of the video, did Roth say he was going to Paducah? I live near there.

Yeah, this is the biggest thing I take issue with.

I haven't watched all of it, but I was hoping that it would discuss more about the actual 5th edition and not the whole general talk most of us have heard before.

I watched it all last night...and they don't get into the 5th edition at all. Oh well...maybe you can give us a good review, Luc.

I will I think mine is stuck in customs or something though

Here's the second part to the interview. I'm at work and haven't watched it, but I don't think it's 5th edition specific either, just a discussion of Greek mistranslations. The video interview seems to be just general promo. Oh well, at least if anyone here wants to get one, now would be the chance with the 15% discount promo code.

That stinks. Hopefully you get it sometime soon. The AENT really wouldn't be that expensive in paperback or hardcover if you have Amazon Prime. My uncle has me on his Prime subscription, so I can just do that when I order stuff LOL.
