I have learned that the Original modern Assyrian flag design in the early 1900s, until the new one was crafted, had an all white background with a blue Cross on it. I would think that is a much better choice of a flag to fly, to represent the Assyrian Nation, with so many being Christians. The new design, seems very out of step to me with the beliefs of the Assyrian People.

Shlama Akhi Chuck.

It is an abomination to many of us. Personally I find the flag itself offensive to my faith, and so do many of the clergy and laity of the church.

Unfortunately, you will discover that not many people understand the symbolism of that unofficial flag. They are just so used to seeing it. Once it is brought to their attention, their reaction is either the same as mine was, or they find justification in all sorts of comparisons of the ancient paganism with our Christianity (which are false of course.)

It's a hot topic and people on both sides at very passionate about it. I've personally seen that flag taken out of parishes. We don't have one at Mar Yukhanan church. There is an official CoE flag, I'm sure you've seen it. That flag, and the flag of the nation the parish is in, should be the only flags visible within the church sanctuary.

I've been to a funeral where a fight erupted between the priest/deacons and family. The clergy refused to continue with the service until that flag was removed from the coffin it was draping. They would not allow it at the burial site, either. I say, good to them.

Those of us who know the meaning and origin of that flag are in a constant struggle to educate the parishioners about it.
