Acts 18:17 Gallio neglected or ceased these things?
#1
In Acts 18, Gallio, a well documented ruler, calms down a mob against Paul, because he did not want to interfere with Torah laws. Then, it says that the pagans, beat Sostenes but 'Gallio' neglected these things.

The root word, can mean 'bear' or 'cease'. Is it very logical that he, just before his judgement seat would ignore illegal beatings?

Just like the tribune (Acts 23:10; Acts 19:40) did in case of Paul, they did not allow riots so the choice for 'cease' is more logical.

What do you think of this split word?

Murdock
"And all the Gentiles laid hold of Sosthenes an Elder of the synagogue, and smote him before the judgment-seat. And Gallio disregarded these things."

My version
"And all the Gentiles laid hold of Sosthenes an Elder of the synagogue, and smote him before the judgment-seat. But Gallio ceased these things."

The same applies to
2 Corinthians 10:9
"But I forbear, lest I should be thought to terrify you terribly, by my epistles."

It does not make sense for Paul to say: "I forbear/ignore it." What would he ignore? That some people disregarded him as from the Messiah? But Paul did _not_ ignore that because he wrote about it!

Paul (to my honest opinion) just wanted to say: "I stop boasting otherwise it looks as if I try to scare you."

My version:
"But I cease, lest I should be thought to terrify you terribly, by my epistles."

What do you think about this?

distazo, you are entirely correct when you state - it does not make sense for Paul to say: "I forbear//ignore it."
Because it was not something Paul wrote! Its a spurious addition to the text. Currently I do not accede to Aramaic primacy, but also I have the numerically validated 100% perfect Greek text in my possession, which was compiled "after" verifying all deletions and additions in every text, which i have just spent seven years translating from by the way, and the reason it doesn't make sense to you is because it wouldn't have made sense to Paul to even say such a thing, not to mention us, as is verified by the 100% correct text. You can get it at unleavenedbreadministries-just Google "numeric new testament" cheers. <!-- s:bigups: --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/bigups.gif" alt=":bigups:" title="Big Ups" /><!-- s:bigups: -->
