John 12:47 - Keep or Believe?
#1
Shlama,

Here's a variant reading that I thought I'd toss out to see what the consensus is here:

NASB reads: If anyone hears My sayings and does not keep them, I do not judge him; for I did not come to judge the world, but to save the world.

vs.

KJV reads: And if any man hear my words, and believe not, I judge him not: for I came not to judge the world, but to save the world.

the two Greek terms are, in SIL Galatia font:

fulaxj = keep

pisteuosej = believe

going to the Peshitta text, the reading is r=n = keep

a similar-looking term for "believe" is r4n.

although somewhat similar in appearance, check out their Dead Sea Scroll (DSS Scribal font) counterparts:

r+n = keep
r$n = believe

the very close similarity between the Shin and the Tet make me think this option is a more viable explanation than the Estrangela script, as a scribe misreading the Tet as a smudged/faded letter Shin. either way, the Aramaic certainly explains it much easier than the Greek!

Feedback? Do I get a cookie or a beer? <!-- s:lookround: --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/lookround.gif" alt=":lookround:" title="Look Round" /><!-- s:lookround: -->

Shlama,

go here:

<!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://www.historian.net/DSSfont.htm">http://www.historian.net/DSSfont.htm</a><!-- m -->

the font download is near the bottom of the page. once it is installed, you're good to go -- just come back to this topic and you should be able to read it fine.
