novice question
#1
Hi, hope everyone is well. This question has probably been answered many times already. I have read that God's name (MARYYA?) the equivalent of YHWH actually appears in the New Testament of the Peshitta, is this true? Can anyone recommend any websites on the Peshitta. thankyou in advance.

There is an ongoing discussion of this topic under the "F.A.Q." section of the board index. Currently, I am somewhat undecided on the topic, as there are some grammatical irregularities in how the various words for (MoR) are being used in context. Personally, I think (MoR:Yo`) is a grammatical form of some sort that allows it to correlate back to YHWH, when need be, but also allows it to be used in more generic terms as well. Just my two cents worth.

Shlama,

i would love to be able to say MARYA in the Peshitta is ALWAYS in reference to the Father (contextually, of course), but there are a few places in the A"NK (Peshitta OT) where MARYA is used to translate titles other than YHWH, which qualify how we read it in the NT. here's a list of the ones i've found in my studies:

Hebrew original / Aramaic translation

Sh???moth (Exodus)
15:2 Yah / Marya

Tehillim (Psalms)
94:7 Yah / Marya
94:12 Yah / Marya
114:7 Adown / Marya
115:17-18 Yah / Marya
118:17 Yah / Marya
118:19 Yah / Marya
122:4 Yah / Marya
135:4 Yah / Marya

YeshaYahu (Isaiah)
1:24 HaAdown YHWH / Mara Maruwta
3:1 HaAdown YHWH / Mara Maruwta
10:16 HaAdown YHWH / Marya Alaha
10:33 HaAdown YHWH / Marya Alaha
19:4 Adowneem / Marya
26:4 Yah YHWH / Marya Alaha

Malaki (Malachi)
3:1 HaAdown / Marya

NechemYah (Nehemiah)
8:10 l???Adoneynu / Marya
10:29 (30 in the Hebrew) ???b???Torot haEloheem??? / ???Namuwsa d???Marya,??? and also ???Moshe eved haEloheem??? / ???d???Muwshe abdeh d???Marya???

there may well be more, but as you can see from these examples alone, MARYA didn't ALWAYS translate the NAME itself, but sometimes Adown, Yah, and even Eloheem. obviously in these instances we should understand the text to be referring to the Father, but we must be truthful that since MARYA wasn't used exclusively for "YHWH," then the appearances of it in the Peshitta NT really need to be taken individually, so that we don't put a spin on a text that may not be what we think it to be. i think there are times when we really should understand it as Master rather than YHWH. but ultimately it is a personal opinion, i believe, and so i'm fine if somebody disagrees.

those are my current thoughts on it. i wish it were simpler, i really do. <!-- s:crazy: --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/crazy.gif" alt=":crazy:" title="Crazy" /><!-- s:crazy: -->

Dear Jeremy,

Does your column heading "Hebrew original" refer to the Masoretic Text, the older Hebrew Tanakh from which the Targums & Septuagint may have come, or the hypothetical original?

Peace & Brotherly regards,

Shlama akhi Raymond,

the Hebrew column info comes from the Masoretic. specifically, i read from the Biblia Hebraic Stuttgartensia so as to have access to the greater and lesser masorah and the alternate text readings footnoted.

the above verses were also checked for the known instances of scribal emendations for the Name and found free from tampering.

hope that helps clarify!
