Mingana Peshitta Massorah
#16
Burning one Wrote:Shlama,

Wow...so is that Romans according to the Eastern order lineup? where do you find the time for all this? <!-- s:onfire: --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/onfire.gif" alt=":onfire:" title="On Fire" /><!-- s:onfire: -->

also will it be available in the analysis tool as the 1905 and Khabouris are? is that the goal to which you're working?

i've been doing personal translations from the Khabouris into English in my limited free time this past year -- i've only done 4 books thus far -- and i haven't yet downloaded this Mingana text, so in your opinion is there sufficient difference between the two to merit producing an English translation of this text?

Chayim b'Moshiach,
Jeremy

Shlama Akhi Jeremy:
I've finished the INDEX for Mingana Syriac 148. It is the same text as the Khabouris. There are of course some grammatical variants as between the UBS 1905 Peshitta and the Khabouris Codex. In my 2005 transcription of the Khabouris I colour-coded all of the variants. I was pleasantly surprised to see that the scribe/scribes did the same type of colour-code while producing Mingana Syriac 148. I used blue and they used red. This can be shown throughout the manuscript.

In my opinion Mingana Syriac 148 is superior to the Khabouris Codex because it has marked all of the variants and is now ascribed as the Peshitta New Testament Massorah.

Shlama Khulkon:
I've been in touch with the University of Birmingham and we are not allowed to set up a private download of Mingana Syriac 148 at Dukhrana. I have restored the INDEX to conform to the actual numbering of the manuscript pages on their web page. The numbering is off if you've noticed. Pages 33 and 133 are non-existent while the manuscript is in its entirety.

Again, we;ll be posting the Index as well as the LINK to the University of Birmingham. For now, here is the INDEX for your reading enjoyment. Please let us know if you find any errors.

Shlama Khulkon:
I came across a quote in the book The Journal of the Royal Asiatic Society of Great Britain and Ireland for 1935, on page 188, which agrees that Mingana Syriac 148 is indeed the New Testament Peshitta Massorah.

<!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://books.google.ca/books?id=3MIsAAAAIAAJ&pg=PA188&lpg=PA188&dq=mingana+syriac+148&source=bl&ots=u-qtsE0SGU&sig=O2QDrC-WUwc3Pzrwqyfmco3d8HA&hl=en&ei=RJP3SuLMO5LWtgOaoLgU&sa=X&oi=book_result&ct=result&resnum=9&ved=0CCAQ6AEwCA#v=onepage&q=mingana%20syriac%20148&f=false">http://books.google.ca/books?id=3MIsAAA ... 48&f=false</a><!-- m -->

While the Old Testament Massorah is represented in a unique MS. in the British Museum, the New Testament Massorah is represented by a unique MS. in my collection (Mingana Syriac 148), and it is to be hoped that Weiss, who has had the praiseworthy diligence to investigate such a complicated subject as the Massorah of the Old Testament, will some day do the same for the less complicated text of the New Testament.

I just took my first look at the Mingana. It is a little disorienting to me at first because of the script variations and the eastern pointings, so I will have to get acclimated some to the markings. I see there is a 10 word segment in red preceding Matay 1:1. Probably just an add-on introductory of some sort?

Has anyone translated that yet? Anyhow, probably quite benign, but it will be interesting for me to see what it says. I get back to you later on it, if I make any headway on it.

For what its worth, this is the general flavor of
the opening introduction to Matay, in the Mingana:

'al chay:leh
d'mo:ron yeConfusedhuw' mConfusedhiy:cho`
mConfusedha:riy:nan l:mek:t'ab
`e:wan:g'li:yown qa:diyConfusedhe`
k'o:ruw:zuw:tho` d'ma:t'ay

upon his-power
of-our-master Yeshua the-Anointed
committed-we to-so-write
gospel the-holy
the-proclamation* of-Matay

Upon his power, of our master Yeshua the Anointed, committed we to so write Gospel the Holy; the proclamation of Matay.

Just curious: What are other ways to render k'o:ruw:zuw:tho`?

Good question Aaron, as I think you probably sense a weakness with that word, as I do also in hind-sight.

(k'o:ruw:zuw:tho`) is ID #10560 on the Dukhrana website, for anyone wanting to do a concordance on it. It has a number of inflected forms also and is used maybe 10 times or so in the Peshitta. The lexicon lists "preaching or proclamation". So yes, there are always different and likely better ways to render it. Can't say that "preaching" works either though, as Matay didn't do the preaching, and "proclamation" not seeming to be the best of fits, but workable.

This was the dictionary definition, that sort of gave a leaning to use "testament" for this one occurrance:

1.Something that serves as tangible proof or evidence: The spacious plan of the city is a testament to the foresight of its founders.

But even so, "the-testimony of-Matay" would have been the better noun form for this context, yet it still conflicts with its simultaneous use in the SHD (witness/testimony) root. Something I hadn't checked on. So at this juncture, maybe "the-proclamation of-Matay" is a safer choice, if not a better alternate available.

Another word of question is (mConfusedha:riy:nan) It has no direct match in the Peshitta itself, but is from the root, $r. It is written in a plural male participle form of some sort with a 1pc suffix (we). The context suggests something in the line of "we-formed", "we-established", "we-committed", "we-set upon", etc.

Thanks for the comment Aaron.

It will be interesting to look more at the Mingana for variances with what I assume is the 1905, and if I find some, I will try to post them.

Shlama,

for my two shekels worth, i'd go ahead and render the term along the lines of proclamation. i suppose testament would work, but the problem is that most people think "will/covenant" when they read "testament," which might give the impression of a different idea being presented there.

i think "proclamation" works well as it is indeed what Matthew proclaims about the Messiah.

of course, this not being an actual inspired passage, we could have room for wiggle in order to clearly present the info. but when the root KRZ is in the actual text, i normally go the "proclaim" route, myself, and reserve "declare" for the SBR root.

I tend to agree with that, and revised the original translation with a * notation.

In what I assume to be the PDF files for the 1905, and reading the same on the Dukhrana site, the rending for Matay 8:4 is:

we`mar leh yeConfusedhuw' ch:ziy l:mo` l`nosh `o:mar `ant'
And-said to-him Yeshua, "See for-what to-man saying thou."

It is missing the "negative" that appears necessary by context, and which does appear in the other gospels.

Without getting specific on vowel pointings, this is how the Mingana renders it, as I expected it should read:

we`mar leh yeConfusedhuw' ch:ziy l:mo` l` l`nosh `o:mar `ant'
And-said to-him Yeshua, "See for-what not to-man saying thou."

A quick glance at the Khabouris original, and Stephen's transcription of it, showed that the "not" negative did not appear in the Khabouris either, for Matay 8:4. So interesting I guess, that the Mingana does contain the "not".
