Andrew Roth's ARAMAIC ENGLISH NEW TESTAMENT
#1
September 14, 2009

In pages iv-vi in the Introduction of his ARAMAIC ENGLISH NEW TESTAMENT (Netzari Press, 2008) Andrew Roth explains his textual methodology which is careful comparison of a suitable English translation with the best available Aramaic text.

For his Aramaic text, Roth uses the ancient Khabouris manuscript of the 22 books of the Peshitta, and for the Western 5, he uses the Syriac New Testament published by the British and Foreign Bible Society. He provides his merged text in Estrangelo script on adjacent pages for direct comparison with the English text.

For his English text Roth merges and modifies two excellent public domain sources, the Peshitta Interlinear by Paul Younan and the translation of the Syriac Peshitto version by James Murdock. This functional use and modification of existing sources is clearly explained on page v in his book. For the first part of the New Testament Roth uses Paul Younan???s Interlinear text for ???Matthew 1 to Acts 15 and James Murdock???s translation for the remainderr, each word has been cross-checked with Aramaic.??? Roth further states, ???In places where James Murdock used the later Western Peshitto readings, the Eastern originals have been restored.???

An important part of the problem that some have had with Andrew???s approach may have been their preconceived notion that Andrew was producing yet another English translation, which is not what he did. Rather he has pulled together a fine version of the Eastern Aramaic text and compared it to a merged and corrected English text.

Currently, the great Bible scholars all continue to reject the Peshitta and we will never get their attention if we spend our time attacking each other. We should be building upon the work of Lamsa, Murdock, Younan, Bauscher, and Roth rather than tearing down what has been achieved. There is much to be learned from the works of these great men, but none of us will achieve perfection until the LORD returns. Can't we all get along and look beyond our pridefullness?

Sincerely,

Otto

AMEN to that!

I value all translations, all the men you mention are sincere hard workers who I value. Nobody should think more or less from himself or from others.
