Havah, first things first - can you read Aramaic using any script (Hebrew~Ashuri, Estrangelo, etc.?) I'm not concerned with pronunciation or knowing the grammar, just want to know if you can read the words.

Shlama Havah,

In my opinion it would be very beneficial to get accustomed to 3 scripts:

Estrangelo
Serto
Swadaya

While there is a large amount of Aramaic literature in Hebrew~Ashuri script, the vast majority of grammars and tutorials are written using one or more of the above scripts. Anyone familiar with the Hebrew script will have no problem becoming proficient at reading these 3 scripts in a matter of a few weeks.

After that, I would purchase a copy of Thackston's Grammar. It is IMO the best one available. There are also links on this forum to free grammars on Google Books.

Short of a university-level class, that's the best way to learn to read and understand Aramaic.
