Diabolos (Gk) --> Iblis (Ar)
#1
This is not a mistranslation into Greek but rather a possible mistranslation from Greek -> Aramaic -> Arabic which I would really appreciate your verification on.

dictionary.com has the following definition of iblis. In Arabic it is ibliis ??????????

Iblis
???noun Islamic Mythology.
an evil spirit or devil, the chief of the wicked jinn.
Origin:
< Ar ibl??s < Gk di??bolos (see devil ); di- lost by confusion with Aram di- of

I'm wondering if there really is a word for "of" in Aramaic that corresponds to "di". Is there a good online Aramaic / English dictionary you could point me toward for this? To me, "di" sounds much more like a Latin word than Aramaic but my knowledge of Aramaic is extremely limited.

Shalom, Shlama, Peace,

Still learning but as far as I know that could be "d'" signifying the possesive. Any Syriac Grammar or primer will have it explained. English translation would be "of".

Have a look here

or search the forum for grammar, good grammar books were suggested here not long ago.

Easiest practical example is the beginning of Pater Noster in Aramaic. Don't have a link on hand here to an on-line audio version but it is worth listening (and learning!), strongly encourage you to it (when my younger children heard it they started singing the prayer).

I'm sure I will be soon corrected by some Aramaic speaker ...

Thank you for your response Jerzy. When I hear the word grammar I get a bit frightened the text will be light-on with vocabulary and I'm not going to find it too much use. Have you bought one and started going through it?

Pater Noster is Latin for the Lord's Prayer I believe. I'd rather use the Armaic name for it if you happen to know it. Thanks for your help.

Shlama jookie,

I think Lord's Prayer in Aramaic is mostly known by the first words "Awan Dwashmaya", or "Abwoon Dbashmaya", i.e. Our Father _of_ Heaven. Yes, Pater Noster is "Our Father" in Latin, I used to be a member of the RCC (largest Christian denomination in the world) and that's the title of this prayer that first comes to my mind.

Re your original question - On second thought, "d" is very frequent and if you open any page of the Aramaic NT and pick any sentence you will almost surely find at least one "d" in that sentence with the meaning of "of".

Links to audio version of the prayer :
