Learning Assyrian is awesome.
#1
I'm finally learning Old Assyrian. Yay.

Years ago, I wanted to learn it, but all the books I saw on Amazon used the western script, and I didn't have a teacher at the time, but at the same time I found an excellant teacher of Hebrew. So I've been learning that for years. Now I've found an Assyrian Grammar book in the eastern script, which has made me very happy.
I don't know how good it will be, but if anyone wants the link: <!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://www.lulu.com/content/445848">http://www.lulu.com/content/445848</a><!-- m -->
I don't know what the rules are about posting links so if that's a no no, please delete my post.

I just wanted to share my excitement about learning Assyrian <!-- sSmile --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/smile.gif" alt="Smile" title="Smile" /><!-- sSmile -->

Shlama David,

Congratulations and let us know if you need help on your endeavour!

PS - links are not a problem.

PSS - it's Aramaic, not Assyrian. The Assyrian language was actually Akkadian, now extinct as a spoken tongue. It may be loosely referred to as Assyrian since modern Assyrians are the largest grouping that still speak it, but technically it's Aramaic.

Shlama Paul,

Thanks for the encouragement. I guess I got carried away there. I really don't like the word Syriac, and I've heard Assyrians call it old Assyrian, so I thought I'd refer to it the way the people that actually speak it do. But I respect you heaps, so I'll say Aramaic from now on. <!-- sSmile --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/smile.gif" alt="Smile" title="Smile" /><!-- sSmile -->

Hey, does anyone know what's happened to <!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://www.assyrianlanguage.com">http://www.assyrianlanguage.com</a><!-- m --> ?

I've tried it on two computers and it seems it has been down for a while now, or is it just me?

Does anyone know what's happening there?

Peace.

Shlama dowidh,

That site has been "down" for a while, not really sure what happened to it. If you look closely at the top of your browser, you'll see the words "Welcome to The Assyrian Aramaic Language Website" at the top. Additionally, viewing the source of the page gives this (in HTML):

Quote:<html>
<head>
<title>Welcome to The Assyrian Aramaic Language Website</title>

</head>

<body topmargin="0" leftmargin="0">
</body>
</html>

If you're unfamiliar with HTML, it's basically the language of web pages: the browser reads the HTML and produces a nice, readable web page. The more lines of HTML there are, the more content there is to the site, and looking at the above shows that there's very little content on the site (to compare, view the source of any other web site by right-clicking and selecting "View Source" in Internet Explorer or "View Page Source" in Firefox).

So basically, the site is working, it's just that there's almost nothing on the site.

That's the thing.
In my opinion it was one of the most professional, scholarly sites on the internet on Aramaic.
And it was very well designed. So why would they want to take it down?

Makes no sense.

Shlama Akhay,

I know Alan Aldawood was struggling with some health issues prior to the site going away, let's pray that he is alright and making a speedy recovery. This may be a temporary thing, God willing.

Amen, let's all pray for him to have a speedy recovery. I know I will.
