Comparing Lamsa with Etheridge
#16
Shlama All,

Lamsa's translation of Romans 8:1 has two serious differences from all others of the Peshitta:
Quote:Romans 8:1
Khabouris
0xy4m (w4yb rsbb Nyklhm fd Nyly0l Fwbyx tyl Lykm
Lamsa
There is therefore no condemnation to them who walk in the flesh after the spirit of Jesus Christ.

Etheridge
Hence, there is no condemnation to them who do not walk according to the flesh, in Jeshu Meshiha.

Is this a typo, or has Lamsa taken liberty to ignore the negative "loh"?

Not only has Lamsa omitted the negative "la" but he has added the phrase "the spirit of" to the text. The word for "the spirit" does not exist in the Peshitta text of the verse. It does occur in the Greek, however! The Majority of Greek mss. have "pneuma" -"Spirit" , referring to The Holy Spirit, and the KJV translates that text:

Quote:There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit
.

Lamsa was not even translating the Peshitta at that point; he was following the KJV translation of the Greek text!

But Lamsa did this on a regular basis in the NT.
