Any NEW Information On Mari/P.E.A.C.E. ?
#1
Dear Andrew,

Might there be ANY NEW information on your P'shitta New Covenant, Mari/P.E.A.C.E. ?

What day that it will be released, is it still right around Passover?

And since there is argument on WHAT DAY that Passover actually begins, can you give us YOUR date of release for Mari/PEACE?

Have you opened a website for Mari/P.E.A.C.E. yet?

I've looked for it (Googled for it) but NOT found one yet.

Any NEW news on Mari would be greatly appreciated by me, and I would be willing to bet for a lot of other folks here at Peshitta.org too!

Longing for your New Covenant, and hoping for the BEST.

Shlama Akhi Albion,

Yes dear brother, there is some news. I have been trying to not post every little tidbit but wait for milestones so folks don't think me pretentious on this matter.

Yes, we are still looking for a PESACH release, and the first day of PESACH is--wait for it--

14 Nisan, so no problem right???

Okay, okay, I know. You wanted a GREGORIAN date--the great Chag begins April 20th and ends 7-8 days later depending on who you talk to. But this year there is no debate on Pesach between the major rabbinic and Karaite camps. The barley in Israel as of March 8th was NOT in Aviv and the Rabbinic calendar calls for 2 Adar as well. I think Avi ben Mordechai and Nehemiah Gordon, along with other Karaite bodies that I have also heard from, are pretty reliable authorities on this matter.

Because of the activities of someone who will remain nameless, I am determined not to pre-promote excessively or take pre-publication orders, and this is why no official Mari announcement exists on my websites or at the Netzari Press website, which is still being developed. My main activities right now are triple checking "Mari Main"--the English portion. I found that bunches of notes I had intended my publisher to enter dealing with Khabouris/1905 variances were not done, so I put them in a few days ago--more than 60 in all. The footnote count now stands at 1400 exactly. The last pass on the Aramaic files is rapdily being done. Not that I didn't think these things weren't fine before, but when you see the need to back track on one section it just makes sense to double check the others. None of these things should delay Mari however, as I plan to hand it all off (or rather back) by March 24th.

I have also added to existing footnotes either because I thought topics addressed in the Appendix needed more clarity at the base text level or because a question on this forum inspired me to go deeper--most recently my answer to Reverend Bauscher's query on Hebrews 4:8, which per Paul Younan's request I am not adding to the thread.

We are still fixing a price, but I don't know that figure yet. I am debating whether to give a fairly certain range of it here or not.

In terms of electronic stuff though, there has been an interesting minor development. There are certain long sections of articles that we may release as free downloads for Mari purchasers that get a special access code. This is being worked on, but is secondary to getting the physical volume out. However, given Christina's interest in this idea, I asked my publisher, as long as he was looking at electronic editions (or short books, if you will) for some of the Mari material to entertain the prospect of making all of Mari available in this form. I just asked about this today and have not heard back yet.

It is funny though in a way that after all this time I am only just getting to sit down and read it as an "outside person" though I am not for the first time. Not surprisingly, and at the risk of sounding downright weird if not self-praising, it really seems to read very well. Albion, honestly man, based on what you have shared with me publically and privately, I think just the English portion alone will meet a lot of your needs, and the Aramaic will of course prove more helpful still. I assure you this is ALL REAL. IT IS COMING.

Shlama Andrew,

It would be helpful to me (and I don't wanna be selfish here) to KNOWthe price of Mari/PEACE, if only "a ball field" (and not a for sure.....) idea of a price.

That way, your New Covenant translation has a place in our budget (my wife has already said..."I KNOW HOW IMPORTANTthat this is to you!").

I'm very grateful that you are trying your BESTto give all of us a good product for our money.

And I know that I speak for EVERYONE here in saying 'Thank You' for THAT!

Anyway, it's late, and I need to get into bed, but know that I'm excited like a kid in a toy store!

I hope that you'll give us a ball field figure on Mari/PEACE sometime soon. It's always good to know one's budget for the next month!

Shlama all!

Let the record here at peshitta.org show that on this Resurrection Day (for many, not all), I have completed this task and sent all the necessary files to my publisher. It now falls to him and to our Proofreader in Chief to put it all together and come back with a camera ready layout pdf. From there it is bound.

The final stats on Mari/PEACE:

Approximate length: 900 pages
Footnotes amount: 1414
Extra features/articles: About 30, totalling about 300+ pages.
Electronic access to articles/translation: Currently under discussion. Stay tuned.
Approximate price: No final number yet, but if you will not hold me to it I think it is safe to say that, barring any unforseen ciricumstances beyond my control, Mari/PEACE should be under $60.

Here it is from my publisher's mouth:

Shlama Akhi Andrew,

Todah rabbah!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Wowzer... you definitely hit some big gears to get this done!!!!!!!!!

OK, Shali is taking another quick peek over everything as we speak.

YHWH willing we'll be able to wrap up all pre-layout edits this week!!!

HALLELUYAH!!! YOFFI!!!

Blessings,

Baruch

The next announcement on this I make, YHWH willing, will be that Mari is officially publsihed and available for shipment.

QYAMTEH D'MARAN SAMAYACH!

Andrew, my Dear Brother,

I started waiting on Mari/PEACE back in 1976, in a way.

When I first picked up George Lamsa's New Testament, I somehow knew instinctively THAT THERE WAS MORE.

I can't tell you exactly HOW I knew this, but I DID.

So, I've waited 32 YEARS for Mari/PEACE!

I check this website every day, hoping and waiting, to hear NEW news about Mari/PEACE.

I think that I can handle one more month, since I've waited so long already.

All the P'shitta translations that I've read (and bought!) have led to THIS, to Mari/PEACE.

I somehow feel that the end of my Journey of Expectation is near to hand, and with the publication of Mari/PEACE, I'll finally have what I've looked for, since 1976.

And there are many people (myself included) who have anointed this Mission with their prayers.

Thank you for your work Andrew. We believe in your Gift, and we can't WAIT to actually hold it in our hands like a new born babe!

The world has their "Christmas", but the publication of Mari/PEACE will be 'Messiah-mas' to ME!!

Todah Rabbah Akhan Andrew! We Love you!

I met a guy online once who worshiped the King James Translation of the Holy Scriptures.... I tried to tell him that was what his incessant adulations of that translation amounted to.... but it was to no avail...

I???m almost certain that he had set up a shine in the corner of his home and placed the KJV on a golden-pillowed throne....

I???m completely certain that our spirits and souls will be edified by this new translation of the Peshitta and I thank God for those who have worked hard to get it done....

Shlama to Albion, Christina, Thirdwoe and to the rest of the forum--

Todah for your kind words. I can only pray that Mari/PEACE offers something for every kind of person of faith, or even those who have no faith but are curious as to how the Aramaic words of Y'shua read. In the end, while I of course come from my Nazarene Jewish viewpoint, Mari/PEACE, like the Peshitta itself, is bigger than any of us. It belongs to all people of all points of view.

It has also been a very long struggle to get to this point. I often wondered how deep I should go in the discussion of the text and what the balance is between telling the truth as I see it (and has been not commmonly told IMHO) and not going too far in criticism of others. In the end, the best I could do was try to direct the readers to the places in the diglot that will be the most meaningful for them. So, generally speaking, the footnotes in the text focus on broad theological themes and linguistics; whereas the Appendix and other materials focus on finer halachic details and on how the text was put together, scholarly methodology, outlook and so on.

In the end, I am just one man and have to be true to myself, but at the same time I am extremely grateful to everyone here. Whatever joy Mari/PEACE may bring you, consider it my way of saying thanks to you individually and collectively for this scholarly place that is peshitta.org. And whatever else I may say that is a contrary opinion to one you now hold, please know that all of you reside in my respect, peace and love and that my goal remains to explain my faith rather than "convert" anyone.

With all of this of course, the guiding principle needs to be faithfulness to the Holy Peshitta text first and foremost, but unlike a few that I will not name I think it is important to acknowledge the human factor and its limitations in translating the original Word of YHWH. What Paul Younan said in 2000 about his efforts is doubly echoed in Mari/PEACE by me.

And so, like him, my goal here is more to give the reader the resources they need to ascertain what THEIR VISION of THEIR PESHITTA might be. The English is on one side, the Aramaic on the other. Footnotes below. Articles to the side. To those of you who have seen a Talmud page, it is similar to it in approach even though it doesn't look anything like one.

On the other hand, just as some reading Talmud might gravitate to the main text, others to the tosephot, others to Rashi, etc, the same principal applies here. Some will read the immediate English and stop. Others the Aramaic to see how it reads. Still others want to delve into footnotes and others into broad studies. Whatever the case, within Mari/PEACE my prayer is you will find at least some of what you are looking for even if you disagree with me on other points.

And finally, I don't know how any one person or diglot can live up to all the expectations that may exist but I do know that given some other situations we can and we should try to keep doing better with the Aramaic NT Scriptures, and so hopefully Mari/PEACE will meet that need which never really goes away and be a step in the right direction.

Dear Abishua,

This was in another thread (about George Lamsa):

"A Major Announcement. Mari/PEACE Almost Here

by Andrew Gabriel Roth on Thu Mar 06, 2008 5:30 pm

Shlama Akhi Albion,

I thought you might be the first one to respond!

Anyhow, here is the answer to your questions.

1) We are still setting up distribution channels and payment methods, but I can tell you that I think you will be able to purchase Mari/PEACE with a conventional credit card. You are probably thinking of how Ruach Qadim was set up, but that was with a different publisher than the one I am with now, Netzari Press. I will update you when these arrangements are completed though.

2) I am also pretty sure it will be on Amazon as well, but that's on my publisher to decide. Typically though Amazon ends up purchasing copies from all sorts of web-based smaller entities like Netzari Press to re-sell them through their portal anyway. Amazon usually doesn't care about having authors jump through hoops so long as their regular bulk discounts are in place. Like with #1, when I know more, you will know.

But as for the rest, zowray haymanutha--you of little faith! There should have been NO DOUBT about whether this would come. Yes there have been delays but my team has been steadfast throughout, and now we are almost there."
