Question for Paul
#1
Shlama Akhi Paul,

I was wondering if 1st John 2:19 would qualify for the poetry section. Menan (from us / of us) is used 5 times.
Am I dreaming this or is 1st John absolutely loaded to the gills with all kinds of parallelism?!?!?!? <!-- s:tellme: --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/tellme.gif" alt=":tellme:" title="Tell Me" /><!-- s:tellme: --> <!-- sConfusedhocked: --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/shocked.gif" alt="Confusedhocked:" title="Shocked" /><!-- sConfusedhocked: -->
Could we see some of your translation handiwork if we've "hit the jackpot"? By the way, the theme of sons, fathers, young men, and boys in 1st John 2:12,13 &14 is quite striking in its poetical aspect, you think?

First John? Isn't there only one? <!-- s:lol: --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/laugh.gif" alt=":lol:" title="Laugh" /><!-- s:lol: -->

I'll take a look.

Speaking of 1st John, I noticed that the Peshitta says "false Messiah" in all the verses where the Greek says "antichrist". What's the story there? I posted this before but no one answered me the first time <!-- sSad --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/sad.gif" alt="Sad" title="Sad" /><!-- sSad -->

I also have a question for Paul.

Paul, when is the last time you checked your private mail? <!-- s:eh: --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/eh.gif" alt=":eh:" title="Eh" /><!-- s:eh: -->

Shlama Christina,

The anti- in Antichrist can mean "instead of" or "(over) against." It seems odd the more I think about it though...
because the Greek usually uses the prefix "pseudo-" for 'false'. pseudo-prophetes for 'false prophet, etc.
I'm not sure why Zorba (forum expression for 'Greek translator') did not follow suit here as well with 'pseudo-Christos.'
You'd think he would of !!! ....hmmmm <!-- s:dontgetit: --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/dontgetit.gif" alt=":dontgetit:" title="Dont Get It" /><!-- s:dontgetit: --> <!-- sHuh --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/huh.gif" alt="Huh" title="Huh" /><!-- sHuh -->

So no one knows why Zorba choose to render it "anti-Christos"? <!-- s:dontgetit: --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/dontgetit.gif" alt=":dontgetit:" title="Dont Get It" /><!-- s:dontgetit: --> <!-- s:eh: --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/eh.gif" alt=":eh:" title="Eh" /><!-- s:eh: -->

Not sure except that it sounds cool in English. "Meshikha Dagala" (lit., "Lying Messiah") is the usual term used in Aramaic.

That sounds a lot like the Arabic "al-Masiah ad-Dajjal".
