Verse in question: Acts 17:27, why is it so different from the Greek reading? <!-- s:tellme: --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/tellme.gif" alt=":tellme:" title="Tell Me" /><!-- s:tellme: -->

Shlama Christina,

Here is my translation of Acts 17:27, from Syriac

"so that they seek [or, look for] and they investigate [or, search] concerning Alaha and they find him through his creations, because certainly he is not far from any (one) of us."

-------

KJV: That they should seek the Lord, if haply they might feel after him, and find him, though he be not far from every one of us:

NASB: that they would seek God, if perhaps they might grope for Him and find Him, though He is not far from each one of us;

Shlama Kathi Christina,

If I could show you the Greek and Peshitta readings , "w'd'negeshunah ("and that they may touch him") Greek reading in Aramaic
and "w'man brythah" ("and from his creation)- The Peshitta reading, in Dead Sea Scroll font, or in Pesher Habakkuk font, you would see, I think, that 6 or 7 of the eight letters in one & 9 letters of the other of the 2 phrases resemble each other or are identical. You can get the fonts at Jack Kilmon's web site and try them yourself.
This kind of phenomenon accounts for many Greek readings in the NT and demonstrates that the Peshitta text stands behind the Greek text.

I have many examples like this in my interlinear and plain English translation notes.

Burkta b'Miltha,

Dave
