Hebrews 12:14
#1
Good morning, all.

I'm hoping to get some help with translating Hebrews 12:14 from the Peshitta. My translation doesn't agree with the others I've read (Lamsa, Murdock, others).

Will you be kind enough to post your English translations of this verse?

I appreciate your time and effort.

Respectfully,

Doug "Whitey" Jackson

Run after peace with every person, and after holiness, because without it, no one sees our Lord.

Lamsa: "Follow peace with all men, and holiness, without which no man shall see our Lord."

In this 20th Century translation, "men" refers to all persons and "man" refers any person.

Good morning.

Thanks for the replies. <!-- sSmile --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/smile.gif" alt="Smile" title="Smile" /><!-- sSmile -->

My translation agrees with Mr. Bauscher's in its use of "sees" rather than "shall see" or "will see" (as translated by Lamsa and Murdock, respectively).

Any thoughts as to why the other translators chose a different tense for that verb?

Shlama Doug,

azx is probably a participle , which means its tense could technically be past , present or future. Most often it will be present or past. If the future tense were important here, azxn would have been used.
Theology probably determines the future tense for the others. Many believe "seeing God" is reserved for a future dispensation or after death. That is not NT Theology.

Heb 2:9 But we see him, who was depressed somewhat lower than the angels, to be this Jesus, because of the passion of his death; and glory and honor are placed on his head; for God himself, in his grace, tasted death for all men.
1Jo 3:6 And every one that abideth in him, sinneth not: and every one that sinneth, hath not seen him, nor hath known him.
3Jo 1:11 Our beloved, be not a follower of what is evil, but of what is good. He that doeth good, is of God; but he that doeth evil, hath not seen God.
Re 1:7 Behold, he cometh with clouds; and all eyes shall see him, and also they who speared him; and all the tribes of the earth shall mourn on account of him. Yes: Amen.

Joh 12:45 And he that sees me sees him that sent me.

Joh 14:17 Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you.

John was the apostle of "seeing God". According to our Lord, to know God is to see Him. Only those whose hearts are purified by Him can see Him. To see is to know.

I am a universalist, so Rev. 1:7 in conjunction with Hebrews 12:14 makes a statement about the salvation of all people :"Every eye shall see Him". "He is The Savior of all people, especially of believers." (1 Tim. 4:10)

Yes, all people will believe, eventually, and they will live.
"Without holiness, no one sees our Lord."
"Every eye will see Him."

I say with John in Rev. 1:7, "Yea, and Amen".

Tibotha b'Meshikha,

Dave
