Victor Alexander and genesis 1:1
#1
I notice that Victor Alexander translates Genesis 1:1 as follows

Quote: As the beginning, the Son of God creates the heavens and the earth.*
http://www.v-a.com/bible/genesis_1-4.html

How accurate is this wording? Is there reference to "the Son of God" in the POT?

Shlama Akhi Michael,

I think Vic is trying to pull John 1:1 and 1st John 1:1 into Genesis 1:1. Isn't it really ironic though...that Colossians 1:18 refers to Yeshua as the head, the beginning and the firstborn?!?!? These are three meanings of Heb. 'reshith' !! Take that bit of info back to the first word of Genesis 1:1 and tell me what you come up with! It would seem that the apostle Paul had a taste bud for the mystical !! What think ye?

Shlama Akhi Michael,

There are some improvements I could make to that last reply. There are actually four words in Colossians 1:18 that correspond to bereshith and a related word rosh.

H7225 ראשׁית rê'shiyth
BDB Definition:
1) first, beginning, best, chief
1a) beginning
1b) first
1c) chief
1d) choice part
Part of Speech: noun feminine
A Related Word by BDB/Strong???s Number: from the same as H7218

H7218 ראשׁ rô'sh
BDB Definition:
1) head, top, summit, upper part, chief, total, sum, height, front, beginning
1a) head (of man, animals)
1b) top, tip (of mountain)
1c) height (of stars)
1d) chief, head (of man, city, nation, place, family, priest)
1e) head, front, beginning
1f) chief, choicest, best
1g) head, division, company, band
1h) sum
Part of Speech: noun masculine
A Related Word by BDB/Strong???s Number: from an unused root apparently meaning to shake; the head (as most easily shaken),...

And he is the head of the body, the church; for he is the beginning, the firstfruits of the resurrection from the dead, that in all things he might be the first. (Colossians 1:18 Lamsa Bible)

Two of the four instances that gibe with bereshith of Genesis 1:1 are actual correspondences in the Peshitta Text. The first two words in red ('head' and 'beginning') from Lamsa's translation given above are 04r while the other two words ('firstborn/firstfruits' and 'first') are 0rkwb and Ymdq respectively.
