John 9:6, Possible Peshitta split word?
#1
Hey! Just kidding! Shlama!
I can imagine some of you (specially Byrnesey) anxiously clicking in this tread...

We see at
GNT John 9:6
tauta eipwn eptusen camai kai epoijsen pjlon ek tou ptusmatov kai epecrisen
autou ton pjlon epi touv ofqalmouv

epecrisen = ointed (v. indicative aorist active, 3?? sing. from epicriw = to oint, smear or spread out). According most of ancient commentarist this whole pericope is related to the Baptism (as the miracle seen from the praxis of the Church in Yuchanan???s times). This exegesis is more clearly supported by the Aramaic mention of the 0xwly4d Fydwm9m (not translated in PNT, of course) where Fydwm9m means ???pool??? but also ???Baptism???. Thence the interpretation of Maran Yeshoa???s gesture as ???an ointment??? becomes obvious. The???re also evident allusions to the second Man???s creation story in Gn 2.

Variant: epeqjken (to put, from epiqjmi) in these mss: B (Vatican) and pc (few latins). From
epiqjmi
to lay or put on; place, put; add (Re 22.18a); e. onoma surname (Mk 3.16, 17); e. pljgav beat (Lk 10.30; Ac 16.23); midd. give, put on board (Ac 28.10); attack (Ac 18.10)

In Peshitta:

Nym 0ny= Lbgw 09r0 L9 Qr Nylh rm0 dkw
0yms whd Yhwny9 L9 $=w hqwr

$== to oint, make dirty, cover by

epecrisen Is the best attested reading: P66.75 ' A C D L W Q Y 070. 0216 family 1.13 Koine majority latt (whole latin tradition) sy; Irlat vid (Ireneus latin trans videtur: seems). Point for Zorbas!

Opinions from Greek-primacist scholars: Some (ex. Barret) suspect that the term could have been taken from v. 11 (kai epecrisen mou touv ofqalmouv , NB. here Peshitta: $= ) and prefer the reading from Vatican codex (B). However, it???s possible that this reading could have taken in tune from v. 15 (Pjlon epeqjken mou epi touv ofqalmouv ), NB. here, Peshitta: Ms put or placed: a Peshitta ???split word??? from Greek? What about this, Byrnesey??? I don???t think so, but... just to put some itching on you... .

Fwx0b

Come stas Valentin, how dare you

I don't know about this one, the words are similar and you have similar words round about. I guess with many examples you don't know whether it was because of translation or just slack copying from within the Greek traditions. See what the experts have to say.
