Inbox failure?

I got an email saying there was a new message in my private messages and there were none. Wassup?

Users have the ability to delete a message they previously sent to you, as long as they delete it before you view it. (there is a little blurb on this in the FAQ link above)

I guess when you send a message to someone, it stays in your "Outbox" until they view it. Once they view it, it goes into your "Sentbox." But until that time, you can delete it.

So that's probably what happened.
