Rev 1:5 Variant?
#1
Hello again I was reading through Rev 1 and came upon this.

And from Jesus Christ, [who is] the faithful witness, [and] the first begotten of the dead, and the prince of the kings of the earth. Unto him that loved us, and WASHED us from our sins in his own blood,
-KJV

and from Jesus Christ, the faithful witness, the firstborn of the dead, and the ruler of the kings of the earth. To Him who loves us and RELEASED us from our sins by His blood
-NASB

and from Jesus the Messiah, the Witness, the Faithful, the First-born of the dead, and the Prince of the kings of the earth; who hath loved us, and RELEASED us from our sins by his blood;
-Murdock

I noticed the word used for "released" in the Aramaic has this in the Payne Smith Syriac Dictionary:

"c) to loose from sin, absolve from ordinances, give dispensation; to loose from consecration, as oil of chrism, water of Baptism after the service is over."

Are both wash and release valid definitions of [$ry]? http://cal1.cn.huc.edu/getlex.php?coord ... 05&word=13

If not, where does this variant come from?
