Apostle Peter in Babel?
#1
Hi All,

I know there is a controversy about Peter being in Rome or Babel (Babylon). One side says that Rome is / was the new codeword for Babylon a follow up of the ancient city.
But what does the other side, tell abouto Peter really being in the city Babel of Irak when He wrote 1 Peter 5:13?

Thanks!

Right.

It's almost an entirely different story. Like a couple of years ago when I was driving a truck and used a CB radio, occasionally I'd hear some nutcase talking about Iraq is Babylon, and really you have to give them a little lee-way, because President George W. Bush was pretty creepy.

Ok, creepy?
What did he say?

I think this forum post http://www.christianforums.com/t7816159/ is quite convincing, but still, what does the CoE believe about this?

Interesting question that I hope someone with insight into CoE will answer! In the mean time...

* There are not two camps in this issue but at least three. Otto Zwierlein assumes Peter epistle was either written from Jerusalem or that the forger of the letter, in case it wasn't written by Peter the apostle, intended its readers to think it was: http://www.philologie.uni-bonn.de/philol...n_rome.pdf.

* Jonathan95: "Since Peter was crucified, and crucifixion is a Roman execution method ..."
Who said Peter was crucified?

Well, I'm just saying, it put's some of Peter's words in a different perspective than the American Fundamentalist perspective I was brought up on.

Referring to the CB Radio, I meant that as a disclaimer. I once heard someone on the CB Radio encouraging another user to hang himself by his underwear. Anyway something like Iraq is Babylon, we are re-building Iraq, Iraq is Babylon. Geographically.

As if it wasn't clearly a spiritual reference in John's apocalypse.

Former President George W. Bush was certainly creepy. Some very respectable people believe he was using cocaine.

We can not talk about him in this particular topic. It would be difficult to avoid discussing him entirely, as a historical figure. <!-- sSmile --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/smile.gif" alt="Smile" title="Smile" /><!-- sSmile -->

I don't see any reason not to think Peter wasn't writing from Babel, as he said he was. The city of Babel had a large Jewish diaspora population, and many followers of the Messiah. His main mission was to help establish the Church among the Jewish peoples, as is said in the book of Acts.
