Latin Vulgate - Coblentz - 04-21-2004

Hello all,

Ya know how the Catholics say that the Latin Vulgate is the True version of Scripture? Knowing full well that it's not, what's the best way to bring it down from it's high horse, which they give to it in their minds?

- Paul Younan - 04-21-2004

Hi Dave,

I don't think that's their official position at all. It's just that the Vulgate was used in their liturgy because the liturgy was all in Latin and they needed a version in their own language.

But they are staunch Greek primacists, from my experience. (Although my wife is R.C. - but an Aramaic primacist! )

It was said at another forum. His exact quote regarding the Catholic church and the Latin Vulgate was:

We dont' interpret scripture, for it has already been interpreted by the church for us. We are not scholars and theologians, therefore we do not have the right to attempt to interpret scripture. Self interpretation of scripture is a sin, and very dangerous. That is what the protestants did, and that is what led them away from the church and the true bible, the latin vulgate. If you want to know what a scripture passage means, find out what the church teaches about it. That's all there is to it.

I would assume the church would be getting their interpretations using the Latin Vulgate.

Shlama Akhi David,

I don't think this person speaks in any official capacity for the R.C. church. I'd consult anything the Vatican officially states regarding this issue.

Yeah, it appears as though he is just stating an opinion, but makes it sound like an official R.C. Church view (unless of course they really do teach this). Here is more of what he says:

The Catholic has Divine Faith, and why? Because the Catholic says: "I believe in such and such a thing." Why? "Because the Church teaches me so." And why do you believe the Church? "Because God has commanded me to believe the teaching of the Church; and God has threatened me with damnation if I do not believe the Church, and we are taught by St. Peter, in his epistle, that there is no private prophecy or interpretation of the Scriptures, for the unlearned and unstable wrest the very Scriptures, the Bible, to their own damnation."

That is strong language, my dear people, but that is the language of St. Peter, the head of the Apostles. The unlearned and unstable wrest the Bible to their own damnation! And yet, after all, the Bible is the book of God, the language of inspiration; at least, when you have a true Bible, as we Catholics have, and you Protestants have not.

But, my dearly beloved Protestant friends, do not be offended at me for saying that. Your own most learned preachers and bishops tell you that, and some have written whole volumes in order to prove that the English translation, which you have, is a very faulty and false translation.

Now, therefore, I say that the true Bible is as the Catholics have it, the Latin Vulgate; and the most learned among the Protestants themselves have agreed that the Latin Vulgate Bible, which the Catholic Church always makes use of, is the best in existence; and, therefore, it is, as you may have perceived, that when I preach I give the text in Latin, because the Latin text of the Vulgate is the best extant.

Oh well, enough of that.

I think the guy is a nut. I think the Vatican would agree with my assessment....and they have the final say (according to this guy.)

This isn't necessarily true Akhi Paul. In Greek, Matthew 16 goes like "I call you Petros; and upon this Petras I build my ekklesia". The "Rock" objects are distinct from one another, so whenever they debate the papacy, they always bring up "kefa".

- Paul Younan - 04-22-2004

When it suits their purpose, I'm sure they are Aramaic primacists.

All kidding aside - to my ears, the Vulgate-only Catholic sounds like the KJV-only Protestant. Even if they both occasionally plead their case to the Aramaic underlying the Greek. They are both crazy, anyway - as both the Vulgate and KJV are translations of a translation.

If Meshikha spoke Latin or English, one of them would be right. As it stands, they both fell out of different branches of the same nut tree.

In my experience, RCs are very pro-aramaic, since the Aramaic translation is much more clear than the Greek translation.

And as Paul as said, it's not that the vulgate is the only true bible for Catholics, it's that it's the one we use for liturgy.

Hi, Akhi Paul:
You're right... Vulgata is the -still now- "Official text" for the R.C. in the sense you state...
Ah! Send my blessings to your wife!
