Luke 9:52 - drmlanc - 10-19-2003 Larry Kelsey, who else??? Shlama Akhay, Every Greek text of Luke 9:52 that I have a record of has kwmjn Samareitwn ('a village of Samaritans'). That is, except for one. Tischendorf's edition has polin Samaritwn ('a city of Samaritans'). The corresponding word in the Peshitta is Fyrq which the SEDRA lexicon defines as 'village' or 'field.' The CAL lexicon however gives these entries: qwryy N 1 JLAGal,CPA,Syr villager qwryt@mdyn) N 1 Syr village-town qryh N qryt) 1 passim city 2 passim village 3 Syr field 4 Syr possession 5 Syr %qr mdynt)% territory of a city The Compendious has 'a little village' and 'hamlet.' I suppose the most interesting part of this discovery is how the much more prominent word for 'city' in Aramaic, 'medintha,' is compounded together with 'qry' resulting in 'territory of a city' as its meaning and another form of 'medintha' namely 'medina' (capitalize the 'm' and you have the second most holy site in Islam <!-- s --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/smile.gif" alt="" title="Smile" /><!-- s --> ), when combined with 'qrith' means 'village-town' in CAL's entries listed above.
