RE: Translations Compared: Eastern or Western? - Thirdwoe - 10-11-2015

There is a variant in Mark 5:40 The Peshitta Text has   "But, Eshu sent them all out"  ܕܝܢ ܝܫܘܥ ܐܦܩ ܠܟܠܗܘܢ

The UBS version of The Peshitta, has "But, He sent them all out."  ܕܝܢ ܐܦܩ ܠܟܠܗܘܢ  The UBS follows the reading in the Greek and Latin versions.

I haven't made a full study on this variant yet, but will do a search on the other language versions which might have "Eshu" and will post which English translations have "Eshu" and which ones have "He", showing which version they go with.

Chuck

The same with Mark 6:1 The Peshitta has  ܘܢܦܩ ܡܢ ܬܡܢ ܝܫܘܥ "And Eshu departed from there"  While the UBS version has it worded as ܘܢܦܩ ܡܢ ܬܡܢ "and He departed from there" which again follows/conforms to the Greek and Latin versions.

Again, I haven't made a full study on this variant yet, but will do a search on the other language versions which might have "Eshu" and will post which English translations have "Eshu" and which ones have "He", showing which version they go with.

I found a variant tonight in Luke 2:48, where The Peshitta, reads
"... I and your father..." while the Western altered version of The Peshitta, reads
"...your father and I..."  When Maryam is relating to Yeshua that they had been searching for Him with much anxiety.

The Western version follows the Greek.

I see this also. Great find Thirdwoe. The Eastern reading appears to be the more difficult one, lending credence to it being the original thought, in my opinion.

Some great news is coming... : )

RE: Translations Compared: Eastern or Western? - Thirdwoe - 07-16-2018

I have a bunch of new instances to add to this list...hopefully soon I'll update it.  Recently I have been examining a number of very old 5th-6th century Western Syrian Orthodox produced copies, and have seen clear evidence of later changing of the text of Acts 20:28 and Hebrews 2:9, which had the Eastern reading in them, but someone much later came in and scratched the words off and replaced them with other words to read like the Greek version used among them.

Acts 20:28
Originally reading    "...the Church of Christ, which He purchased with His own blood."
Then changed to     "...the Church of Alaha, which He purchased with His own blood."

Hebrews 2:9

Originally reading    "...who apart from Alaha, tasted death for everyone."
Then changed to     "...who by the grace of Alaha, tasted death for everyone."
One copy has it as   "...who by the will of Alaha, tasted death for everyone."

When I get the time, I will show the images of the places where the alterations to the original text was made.

I just received one book (Romans, 1st Corinthians and 2nd Corinthians), of the many volumed edition "The Antioch Bible" which is put out by Gorgias Press. The Aramaic text is based on the 1905/1920 BFBS printed edition, with new edits, and is a thus a recent product of the Western PeshittO type text in Serto script.

This is NOT The Peshitta New Testament.

Hey Thirdwoe, I am wondering why you haven't posted Jeremy's translation in your list.

That isn't Jeremy's translation, but it would be good to check the readings there and document its agreement with the Eastern Peshitta text even though it hasn't been published in printed form. I will take a look and update the list.
