Acts 13:1 - Aaron S - 03-05-2010

Blessings Brethren,

I came across the name Manaen in Acts 13:1 which in the Aramaic reads as Manaiel (??????????).
Can someone tell me what this name means and if there's a Hebrew equivalent?

Shlama,

the Greek form is not a known name. Thayer's suggests it may be a Grecian form of the Hebrew Menacheym, meaning "Comforter." as it is in the Aramaic, perhaps it means "El's Portion" ???

not much help, but something to chew on...

Chayim b'Moshiach,
Jeremy

Did you also notice the difference with the Greek? Manael was the son of the guardian of Herod.
The Greek has 'was brought up together with Herod'

The Greek mentions this fact but it is not clear why he was brought up together. It leaves the reader with questions. Was the root-word Rabya so difficult to translate? <!-- sSmile --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/smile.gif" alt="Smile" title="Smile" /><!-- sSmile -->
