Matthew 16:20 - Larry Kelsey - 11-08-2004

Shlama Akhay,

Here's Matthew 16:20 from the 1901 American Standard Version-" Then charged he the disciples that they should tell no man that he was the Christ."

I was hoping that the word for charged/commanded in the Peshitta Text would reveal why the Greek texts differ so greatly. The word in the Peshitta is dqp and the two dissimilar words among the Greek texts are diesteilato from diastellomai which Thayer defines as....

1) to draw asunder, divide, distinguish, dispose, order
2) to open one’s self, i.e. one’s mind, to set forth distinctly
3) to admonish, order, charge

....and the other one is epetimjsen from epitimaw which Thayer defines as...

1) to show honour to, to honour
2) to raise the price of
3) to adjudge, award, in the sense of merited penalty
4) to tax with fault, rate, chide, rebuke, reprove, censure severely
4a) to admonish or charge sharply

The CAL site has this info for dqp--

Well, this one's kinda hard to nail down but the word that pre-dated these two highly dissimilar Greek words must have been an Aramaic word from the Peshitta. You don't suppose a Greek primacist would even think about arguing that point would you? Naw....surely not! <!-- sSmile --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/smile.gif" alt="Smile" title="Smile" /><!-- sSmile -->

btw Mr. Kelsey, perhaps you can explain to me why there is this variant in the Greek. bread/dinner in Luke 14:15. Do you think this is because of a literal translation and an idiomatic translation of "bread" being "Jewish" for "supper", just as "tea" is English for "supper"? Just a thought.

Regards,

Chris
